Simonsig

Age: 6

Trainer: Nicky Henderson

Notable Race Wins:-

Neptune Investment Management Novices' Hurdle: 2012

Mersey Novices' Hurdle: 2012

Arguably the most progressive hurdler of the 2011/2012 campaign, Nicky Henderson's Simonsig was simply sensational when romping to a seven-length victory in the Neptune Investmens Management Novices' Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.

Having lost to Fingal Bay earlier in the season, many thought he wasn't perhaps able to perform at the highest level, but a facile win in the Morebattle Hurdle at Kelso was followed up with that Prestbury Park romp before he went on to bag victory in the Mersey Novices' Hurdle at Aintree, where he won by a stunning 15 lengths.

It's not yet known whether the Seven Barrows team will decide to keep him over the smaller obstacles and embark on a Champion Hurdle campaign, or they will step him up to fences and a possible tilt at the Arkle Challenge Trophy.

Whichever one Henderson elects, he is sure to be a major player and the ante-post markets have already seen him propel to clear favourite for the 2013 Arkle, whilst he sits just behind Hurricane Fly in the 2013 Champion Hurdle betting in what could be another cracking season for the improving grey.

Form For 2012/2013 Season

  • 21/12/12 - Noel Novices' Chase - Ascot (1st of 5 - SP 2/9 Fav) - Simonsig was a mightily-impressive winner on his chasing debut as he trounced a mediocre field in the Noel Novices' Chase at Ascot.  Having been sent to the front from the outset, Nicky Henderson's star grey propelled clear of his rivals and jumped fluently, as he won by 49 lengths.
  • 27/12/12 - Wayward Lad Novices' Chase - Kempton (1st of 5 - SP 1/6 Fav) - Simonsig continued his meteoric rise up the novice chasing ranks and was instantly cut for the 2013 Arkle Challenge Trophy as he produced another scintillating round of jumping.  Sent to the the front from the flag fall he yet again piled it on from the front and his rivals were unable to reel him in as he won comfortably by 35 lengths.
