World Series Hurdle History

The World Series Hurdle is a Grade One race run at the Punchestown Festival over three miles for horses aged four years or older.

Taking place around a month after the World Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, this contest has often attracted some of the staying hurdlers who have contested the Thursday showpiece at Prestbury Park.

However, only one horse has managed to win both the World Hurdle and then go on to bag the World Series Hurdle crown and that was the David Nicholson-trained Anzum, who won both in 1999.

Previously, Michael Cunningham's Derrymoyle had been the star of the World Series Hurdle as during his illustrious career he bagged a hat-trick of titles in the late 90's and to this day he is still the most successful horse in the race's history.

Limestone Lad was a classy winner of the 2002 renewal, whilst Jonjo O'Neill's Rhinestone Cowboy completed a successful year in the 2004 contest where he beat World Hurdle champion Iris's Gift by seven lengths in a magnificent performance.

Willie Mullins has a terrific record in the World Series Hurdle and the Co. Carlow master has amassed four winners as a trainer with the wonder mare Quevega being the shining beacon of the winners.

After winning the 2010 David Nicholson Mares' Hurdle at Cheltenham, she then duly stormed to victory in the World Series Hurdle before emulating that magnificent double 12 months later with a superb one-and-a-quarter length success in the 2011 World Series Hurdle beating Mourad.
