Tingle Creek Chase - 6th December, 2014

God's Own produced a fine display to get the better of Balder Succes in the Haldon Gold Cup at Exeter last month and that pair will lock horns again on Saturday afternoon in what is a wide open renewal of the Grade 1 Tingle Creek Chase from Sandown Park.

With Sprinter Sacre and Sire De Grugy both missing this engagement then it makes for a wide open contest and there should be a huge shake-up in the Champion Chase ante-post markets and Tom George's God's Own will be aiming to shine again on the big stage and frank the form with Alan King's exciting Balder Succes.

Oscar Whisky was last seen running a cracker off top weight in the Paddy Power Gold Cup and he could now be the premier representative for Nicky Henderson, whilst Mick Channon's Somersby has been a shining beacon for several years and has been a mainstay in these sort of races.

Harry Fry's Vukovar has come in for significant support in the lead-up to this race and last season's exciting novice will be aim to show that he belongs at this level and has to be considered a lively outsider away from the front few in the market.

The Paul Nicholls-trained duo Dodging Bullets and Hinterland could be another interesting pair in the race and if they can produce their best form have to be considered, whilst Third Intention is in fine form and is another worthy of a mention in an intriguing renewal.

Tingle Creek Chase History

The Tingle Creek Chase is a Grade One race run at Sandown Park over two miles for horses aged four years or older and is widely regarded as a trial for the Queen Mother Champion Chase at the Cheltenham Festival.

Established in 1979, the Tingle Creek is one of the most eagerly-anticipated races of the entire national hunt season and has long been a port of call for trainers and their leading horses.

Just skimming through the illustrious roll of honour shows some of the sheer quality that has been success in this contest as a plethora of winners have used this as a stepping stone for bigger glory at the Cheltenham Festival.

Desert Orchid was a 12 length winner of the 1988 renewal before going on to win multiple grade one contests including the Victor Chandler Chase and most notably the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 1989.

Viking Flagship was an emphatic winner of the 1994 Tingle Creek and it was a springboard for greater things as David Nicholson's stable star went on to win a brace of Champion Chase crowns in 1994 and 1995.

A stellar list of winners of the Tingle Creek somewhat go up a notch at the turn of the century as some of the leading national hunt horses in recent memory have bagged glory in this contest.

The great Moscow Flyer was a dual winner of this race in the mid-2000's for trainer Jessica Harrington and he went on to be a dual Champion Chaser, whilst it would be an era that Paul Nicholls would dominate winning the race from 2005 to 2010.

Amazingly, Kauto Star won the race in 2005 and 2006 before stepping up in distance to become a dual Cheltenham Gold Cup winner as well as a four-times King George VI Chase winner.

Nicholls then unearthed yet another superstar of the equine world as his two-mile phenomenon Master Minded won this race in 2008 and 2010, whilst Twist Magic also bagged the Ditcheat handler another double winning in 2007 and 2009.
