Tied Cottage Chase - 1st February, 2015

Twinlight beat Hidden Cyclone by four-and-three-quarter lengths in the Dial-A-Bet Chase at Leopardstown in late December and the classy duo are set to lock horns again in what is an intriguing renewal of the Tied Cottage Chase at Punchestown.

Willie Mullins's Twinlight has since gone on to disappointing in the Clarence House Chase at Ascot and will hope that a return to Irish soil can see him return to winning ways in a race that can often provide some vital Queen Mother Champion Chase clues.

Hidden Cyclone had falled on his pervious two starts before being edged out by Twinlight over the festive period, but Shark Hanlon's raider has shown that on his day he is a real class act and he will be aiming to get back on the road to the Cheltenham Festival.

Bright New Dawn was fourth in that Dial-A-Bet Chase contest, but improved on that when second in the Dan Moore Memorial Chase and if he can come on again then could feature, whilst Henry de Bromhead's Days Hotel was third in that Dan Moore contest and will have form to find on his last start.

Irish Thistle was pulled up in the Grade 2 Hilly Way Chase last time out and will find it tough at this level, whilst Heavenly Brook is another that should be outclassed in what is a fascinating renewal of the 2m contest at Punchestown on Sunday afternoon.

Tied Cottage Chase History

The Tied Cottage Chase is a Grade Two race run at Punchestown over two miles for horses aged four years or older and is widely regarded as a trial for the Queen Mother Champion Chase at the Cheltenham Festival.

Established in 1999, the race is named after Tied Cottage who was the winner of the 1980 Cheltenham Gold Cup, only to be stripped of the crown after the horse tested positive for a banned substance after the race.

It may be one of the newest national hunt races on the Irish calendar, but the Tied Cottage Chase already has some legendary names of the equine world etched into it with Moscow Flyer being a notable winner of the race.

In 2003, Jessica Harrington's stable star stormed to victory in this contest before going on to the Cheltenham Festival and defeating Native Upmanship by seven lengths in the Queen Mother Champion Chase.

Adding countless titles to his CV during the mid-2000's including the Tingle Creek Chase and Dial-a-Bet Chase, Moscow Flyer then regained his Tied Cottage title in 2005 before going on to more festival glory in the Champion Chase the same year.

Barry Geraghty has a terrific record in this contest and not only partnered Moscow Flyer to dual Tied Cottage and Champion Chase glory, but emulated that feat in 2010 with Colm Murphy's Big Zeb.  Golden Silver had gone into the race as an odds-on favourite, but Geraghty produced a sublime ride to win the contest aboard Big Zeb and send him to the Cheltenham Festival in fine fettle.

The nine-year-old then showed he was leading two-mile chaser around in 2010 by annihilating a top field in the Queen Mother to win by six lengths and enhancing the Tied Cottage Chase's reputation and cementing it as one of the leading trials for the Champion Chase at Prestbury Park.
