Stewards' Cup - 2nd August, 2014

William Haggas's Muthmir was a fine winner of the Skybet Dash last time out and the classy sprinter will bid for more success on Saturday afternoon when he lines up in what is an ultra-competitive renewal of the Stewards' Cup on the final day of Glorious Goodwood.

On a card that will also see the Nassau Stakes take centre stage, there will be a whole plethora of top notch sprint handicappers doing battle and Robert Cowell's Intrinsic is bidding for a hat-trick of wins and was last seen storming to victory at Goodwood and should relish a return to the venue to try and land this valuable prize.

Discussiontofollow is another who will be heading to the south coast track on the back of a win having landed a competitive event at Ascot and he should be on the vicinity here, whilst last year's emphatic winner Rex Imperator will be aiming to defy top weight in this year's renewal, but on his day is a real class act and is more than capable.

Richard Hannon's Ninjago finished in the mid-division in the Wokingham Stakes at Royal Ascot, but is another who if it all falls right for should be able to challenge for the honours, whilst York Glory disappinted in the Wokingham, yet on his day can storm through the field off a red-hot gallop.

Richard Fahey's Alben Star and John Spearing's Ashpan Sam have been a brace of sprinters who can feature prominently in this contest, but they will need to produce career bests to feature, whilst the likes of Fairway To Heaven and Shropshire add tremendous depth to the event.

Stewards' Cup History

The Stewards' Cup is a sprint handicap run over six furlongs for horses aged three years or older.  Traditionally, it is run on the final day of Glorious Goodwood and it always attract a bumper field and some of the top sprint handicappers in the country.

Established in 1840, the Stewards' Cup has always been one of the highlights on the sprinting calendar and many trainers will send their speedsters to the Sussex track to win the valuable prize.

In recent years the fields have been in excess of 25 runners, so the prices offered by bookmakers can be very generous and with so many runners going to post, there are always going to be some big price winners.

Over the last 25 years only three favourites have won the race and there have regularly been winners priced at double-figured odds.

With so many runners contesting the Stewards' Cup it is essential you are drawn on the correct side of the track.  So many variables can affect the ideal draw position, whether the ground or the pace in the race.

Over the last ten years horses drawn high have performed the best and only two horses in the last decade have won from stalls 1-10.

Trainer David Nicholls is definitely a trainer to watch out for as he usually makes the annual pilgrimage to York with a strong battalion and the sprinting specialist has managed to saddle three winners in the last eleven runnings of the race.
