Rockfel Stakes - 26th September, 2014

Jim Bolger's Lucida ran a stormer when a narrow second to Cursory Glance in the Moyglare Stud Stakes at the Curragh and now the Irish raider will drop down in grade on Friday afternoon when trying to bag Group 2 glory in a fascinating renewal of the Rockfel Stakes.

One of the highlights on day two of the Cambridgeshire meeting, the Emerald Isle starlet will hope to build on that effort that saw her just touched off and a repeat of that display will see her go close and she is a prominent figure in the betting in a race that can throw up a 1000 Guineas contender.

Hugo Palmer's New Providence impressed when landing the Group 3 Dick Poole Stakes at Salisbury and is entitled to try her luck at this level and is sure to improve again and could well challenge the red-hot market leader, whilst Kevin Ryan's Calypso Beat was a decent second in the Sweet Solera Stakes last time out and could improve for that effort.

Stroll Patrol was third in the aforementioned Dick Poole Stakes and will need to find some form if she is to reverse the placings with New Providence, whilst the likes of Tigrilla, What Say You and Fadhayyil add more depth to an intriguing contest Newmarket.

Rockfel Stakes History

The Rockfel Stakes is a Group Two run over seven furlongs at Newmarket for two-year-old fillies.

Established in 1981, the Rockfel Stakes can be used as a stepping stone for Classic glory the following year and several fillies have gone on from winning the Rockfel to win the 1000 Guineas.

Finsceal Beo was the last to manage the Rockfel/Guineas double as she stormed to a three length succes in the 2006 Rockfel and then went on to a two-and-a-half length success in the 2007 Guineas.

Now part of Newmarket's Future Champions Day the Rockfel is one of a trio of top two-year-old events held at HQ on the same day with the Dewhurst Stakes and Middle Park Stakes making up a terrific day's racing.

Trainers who have had a good record in the Rockfel are Barry Hills, who has won this race on four occasions, whilst Mick Channon has a good recent record in the Rockfel as he saddled Lahaleeb to glory in 2008 and then a year later trained Music Show to success.
