Richmond Stakes

The Richmond Stakes is a Group Two race run at Glorious Goodwood over six furlongs for two-year-old colts and geldings and can often throw up a potential Classic contender for the following season.

Established in 1877, this race is often targeted by trainers who are looking to nurture their juveniles up in grade before heading to Newmarket the following season to try and bag victory in the 2000 Guineas and several horses have managed to win this contest en route to Classic glory.

Having originally been open to both genders, it was eventually restricted to male horses in 1989 and is one of the major two-year-old events of the Glorious Goodwood extravaganza alongside the Vintage Stakes, which is run over seven furlongs.

Richard Hannon has become synonymous with the ability to train classy two-year-olds and the legendary handler has managed to saddle five winners of the race during his illustrious career having bagged his first victory with Son Pardo in 1992 before he recorded four winners in a row in the late 2000s.

He saddled Prolific to victory in the 2008 renewal before Dick Turpin, Libranno and Harbour Watch secured victory in the 2009, 2010 and 2011 runnings respectively with Richard Hughes in the saddle for all four of the Hannon-trained victories to cement his place as one of the most successful jockeys in the race's history.
