National Hunt Chase Challenge Cup History

The National Hunt Chase Challenge Cup is an amateur riders race run on day two of the Cheltenham Festival over four miles for novice chasers aged five years or older.

Established in 1860, this contest has the longest roll of honour of all the festival races having been run at various tracks during its tenure.  However, it now holds strong affiliation with the festival and attracts some top class novice chasers who use it as a stepping stone to greater things.

Often linked with the various Grand Nationals that are run in the UK & Ireland, this stamina test has been the perfect warm-up for horses who eventually go on to contest either the Irish, Scottish Welsh or English Grand National.

Looking at recent winners of the event, Butler's Cabin is the one that really shines out as he won this contest in 2007 before going on to win the Irish Grand National at Fairyhouse the same season.

Since then Tricky Trickster has competed in the Aintree Grand National after winning this race in 2009 for Gold Cup-winning jockey Sam Waley-Cohen, whilst 2011 winner Chicago Grey looked to be a potential star over the long distance races after winning by four-and-half lengths for trainer Gordon Elliott.

Jonjo O'Neill is certainly a trainer to watch out for in the race as the Jackdaws Castle handler has amassed five winners in the race as a trainer with his first coming in 1995 with Front Line and his last in 2007 with the aforementioned Butler's Cabin.
