Melbourne Cup History

The Melbourne Cup is without doubt the biggest race of the year in Australia as well as one of the most prestigious races in the world, it is known as the ‘race that stops a nation’ and it lives up to that billing with the majority of Aussies having the day off work on Melbourne Cup day. The race is run over 3200 metres and is for horses aged three years and over, while it takes place at the world famous Flemington Racecourse on the first Tuesday of each November. The race over past few years has had a much more International feel with horses from all over the world heading Down Under for a crack at the richest two-mile handicap race in the world.

The entry conditions ensure that only the very best horses take the chance at Flemington each season while the likes of the Irish St Leger winner and the Doncaster Cup in the UK among others are given automatic exemptions should they wish to take them up. Outside of the exemptions the horses are entered into a ballot which takes into account the prize money earned by a horse as well as their handicap weight and form in races leading up to the Melbourne Cup. Horses are then entered into the ballot with the aim of getting the very best field on the track on Melbourne Cup day and that has proven to be the case over the past few years.

The Melbourne Cup has a long and illustrious history with the first race won by Archer all the way back in 1861, it was a historic win for the horse and he came back the very next year to win the race for a second successive time in 1862. One of the trainers from Europe who has had some success at the Melbourne Cup is Dermot Weld who has won the race twice with Vintage Crop in 1993, and of course Media Puzzle who won the race in 2002. He has proven that European trainers can overcome the long trip to lead a horse to glory in the Melbourne Cup, and he continues to take some of his best stayers down under each season for a tilt at the big race.

The 21st century has seen perhaps the greatest ever Melbourne Cup winner with the great Makybe Diva winning the race in 2003, 2004 and 2005, in doing so she became the first horse ever to win the race three times for trainer Lee Freedman. She is simply a legend of the race and by winning it three times he will forever be remembered by punters and fans alike, it is an even more remarkable feat given the fact that she is one of only 14 female horses to win the race.
