July Cup - 12th July, 2014

Eddie Lynam saddled a sensational Royal Ascot sprint double as Sole Power firstly won the King's Stand Stakes on the opening day, before stablemate Slade Power romped to success in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes on the final day and now the pair could clash on July 12 in what is a mouth-watering renewal of the July Cup from Newmarket.

The former has sparkled over the minimum distance of five furlongs and will be upped in distance, whilst Slade Power sparkles over 6f, the distance which this race will be run over, and all being well the pair will do battle in what is one of Europe's most prestigious sprinting events.

Aidan O'Brien's Due Diligence has gradually progressed up the sprinting tree and he was a fine runner-up behind Slade Power at the Royal meeting and he could improve again, whilst Roger Varian's Aljamaaheer was a staying-on third in the same contest and is entitled to take his place in what is an intriguing betting heat.

Spanish speedster Noozhoh Canarias found the 2000 Guineas distance of one-mile too far, so he will return to British shores over a shorter trip and he shows electric pace and has to be respected, whilst Hot Streak is another classy performer who could take his chance at Flat headquarters in a race that is bubbling up into a vintage renewal.

Of the others, Astaire is a youngster on the upgrade and could be a potential surprise package.

July Cup History

The July Cup is a Group One contest run over Newmarket's July course over six furlongs for horses three years or older.  Established in 1876, it is one of the most valuable sprints in Europe and attracts some high class horses, as they look to stake their claim as a champion sprinter.

Lester Piggott is synonymous with the July Cup as the master rider has won the race on ten occasions with his first win coming on Vigo in 1957 and his last on Mr Brooks in 1992.

Other notable names affiliated with this contest are Sundridge who won this race three times in the early 1900s, whilst more recently equine stars such as Stravinsky, Oasis Dream and Starspangledbanner have etched their name in the roll of honour.
