Jockey Club Stakes - 3rd May, 2014

Jim Bolger's Trading Leather was a fine winner of the Irish Derby last season and now the Godolphin raider will look to kick off his four-year-old campaign on 2000 Guineas in winning style when he lines up in a cracking renewal of the Jockey Club Stakes at Newmarket.

Second in the King George and the Juddmonte International just highlights his ability at the top level, but he will need to be at the top of his game as he will come up against some notable adversaries with Penglai Pavilion another raider donning the famous blue silks of Godolphin.

Sir Michael Stoute's Gospel Choir struggled to land a blow when fourth in the Earl Of Sefton Stakes and he will be aiming to use that as a springboard to this Group 2 contest and should strip fitter for the outing, whilst John Gosden's Brass Ring was a winner at Lingfield Park last time out and even though is stepping up hugely in grade deserves his chance.

Richard Hannon's Pether's Moon will make his seasonal reappearance and when he's on a going day he can land a blow at this level, whilst Times Up will be aiming to set a fierce gallop and utilise his stamina in this cracking Pattern contest at Flat HQ.

Jockey Club Stakes History

The Jockey Club Stakes is a Group Two race run at Newmarket over one mile, four furlongs for horses aged four years or older.

One of the oldest races in the UK fixtures list, the Jockey Club Stakes was first run in 1894 and competed over 1m 2f, before subsequently being extended to 1m 6f in future races.

However, it was dropped back to 1m 4f in 1963 and it is often used by trainers as a springboard to the Coronation Cup, which sees some of the leading middle-distance horses do battle for the coveted Epsom trophy.

Incidentally, the last horse that managed to win both the Jockey Club Stakes and the Coronation Stakes was the Andre Fabre-trained Shirocco, who secured the coveted feat in 2006.

Other recent winners who stand out in the illustrious roll of honour include the classy Silver Patriarch, who won the race for John Dunlop and Pat Eddery in 1999, whilst the turn of the century also saw some classy victors.

St Leger winner Millenary was another notable winner for the Dunlop-Eddery partnership in 2001, whilst Clive Brittain's Warrsan and James Given's Dandino add great depth to a star-studded list of winners in one of the leading Group Two of the horse racing calendar in the UK.
