JLT Novices' Chase History

The JLT Novices' Chase is a Grade Two race run on day two of the Cheltenham Festival over two miles, four furlongs and is open to horses aged five years or older.

Having sponsored a race between 2005 and 2010 at the Cheltenham Festival that is now known as the Centenary Novices' Handicap Chase, Jewson decided to get involved with another novice chase and sponsored the inaugural running of this contest in 2011.

The inception of this race gave up-and-coming novices the chance to contest a top class contest as they look to build on a career over fences and the first edition of the race certainly saw some classy runners take part.

Paul Nolan's Noble Prince ridden by multiple champion jockey AP McCoy managed to take the honours by four lengths beating Wishfull Thinking, who incidentally went on to win at both Aintree and the Punchestown Festival later on in the season.

As this race begins to gain a roll of honour we will no doubt see if any horses will continue on an upward curve after running in the race and it would be no surprise to see contenders in the race lining up for the Queen Mother Champion Chase, Ryanair Chase or even the Cheltenham Gold Cup later on in their careers.
