Henry VIII Novices' Chase - 6th December, 2014

Paul Nicholls has saddled two of the last three winners in the Henry VIII Novices' Chase and the Ditcheat handler will unleash a primary contender in Saturday's renewal as Irish Saint is aiming to notch his second win at Sandown Park on the spin having beaten Chris Pea Green with aplomb last month.

A host of exciting novice chasers will be aiming to enhance their Arkle Challenge Trophy claims in this Grade 1 event on Tingle Creek Chase day and Court Minstrel has shown some fine form over the larger obstacles and was last seen winning at Cheltenham.

Dunraven Storm was another to sparkle at Prestbury Park last month when getting the better of Vibrato Valtat and that pair could well lock horns again in this 2m contest, whilst Tom George's Haldon Gold Cup winner God's Own is also entered, but he's expected to miss this test in favour of the aforementioned Tingle Creek.

Henry VIII Novices' Chase History

The Henry VIII Novices' Chase is a Grade One race run at Sandown Park over two miles and is open to horses aged four years or older.

Held in early December it often attracts some top class hurdlers who are looking to venture into the chasing world and this contest is often used as a springboard to greater things later on in the season.

Some contenders who have competed in this contest can often be seen taking part in the Arkle Challenge Trophy at the Cheltenham Festival and pit their wits against the best two-mile novice chasers in the country.

Even though many have failed in their quest to land this prize and the Arkle, this race has still unearthed some stars and many winners have gone on to win Grade One contests.

Nicky Henderson's Fondmort was a classy winner of the 2001 Henry VIII Novices' Chase and the Seven Barrows inmate went on to become a national hunt star and his highlight came in 2006 when he stormed to victory in the Ryanair Chase at the Cheltenham Festival.

Other Grade One winners include Paul Nicholls' Thisthatandtother and Henrietta Knight's pair of Impek and Racing Demon who all used winning this contest as a catalyst for bigger achievements during their career.
