Greenham Stakes History

The Greenham Stakes is a Group Three race run at Newbury over seven furlongs for three-year-old colts and geldings.

Established in 1906, the race is regarded as one of the leading trials for the 2000 Guineas and many have used the race as a springboard to Classic success, whilst some have even gone on to glory at Epsom and lifted the coveted Derby crown.

Ian Balding's Mill Reef had already dominated the two-year-old division a year previous, but in 1971 he was a classy winner of the Greenham before going on to lift the Derby at Epsom along with the Eclipse, King George VI & Queen Elizabeth II Stakes and the Arc in a phenomenonal season.

Sir Henry Cecil has a superb record in the race and has bagged victory on six separate occasions with Wollow and Kris two notable winners in the 1970s, but the leading light of the sextet came in 2011 when he trained the mighty Frankel to victory.

The Warren Place inmate then went on to dominate the flat scene during a record breaking year that saw him remain unbeaten as he notched up victory in the 2000 Guineas before winning the St James's Palace Stakes, Sussex Stakes and the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes in a simply mind-blowing season.
