Diamond Jubilee Stakes - 21st June, 2014

Eddie Lynam will look for more sprinting success at Royal Ascot on Saturday afternoon as Slade Power aims to emulate Sole Power's display in the King's Stand Stakes earlier in the week by storming to victory in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes, which is the feature event on the fifth day of the extravaganza.

A winner of the valuable sprint on British Champions Day last season, the Irish raider kicked off his campaign in winning style with victory in the Group Three Greenlands Stakes and if he can build on that effort at the weekend then will be a tough nut to crack.

However, a host of top notch sprinters will line up and Roger Varian's Aljamaheer is trying to show that he can excel over six furlongs and having landed the Summer Mile last year he shows that he oozes stamina, but will need to build up his speed in what is going to be a rapid gallop from the outset.

Gordon Lord Byron already has a Group One crown to his name having landed the Betfred Sprint Cup at Haydock Park last term, but he has struggled to feature this season and will hope that a return to 6f will see him sparkle, whilst Kevin Ryan's three-year-old Astaire has shown some exceptional pace this campaign and looks as though he will relish the trip.

Aidan O'Brien's Due Diligence was a fine winner of a Listed contest last time out and could be the potential springer in the field as he aims to continue his rise up the ratings, whilst the likes of Darwin and Jack Dexter are another couple of runners with a terrific chance of featuring in this cracking renewal.

Diamond Jubilee Stakes History

The Diamond Jubilee Stakes is a Group One race run at Royal Ascot over six furlongs for horses aged three years or older.

Established in 1868, it was originally known as the Cork and Orrey Stakes, but was changed to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth in 2002 and is now one of the sprinting highlights of the flat racing calendar.

Having gained Group One status the same year it became part of the Global Sprint Challenge which attracts the leading speedsters from all over the world and joins the July Cup and King's Stand Stakes in the challenge.

Contested on the final day of Royal Ascot it often attracts a plethora of horses who haev contested the King's Stand Stakes on the opening day of the five-day meeting,  Right Boy won the 1958 and 1959 Golden Jubilee Stakes after previously winning the King's Stand a year earlier, whilst there have been a whole of host top sprinters to take the crown.

Australian superstar Choisir won the 2003 event after winning the King's Stand Stakes earlier in the week and then nearly grabbed more Group One glory when finishing a narrow second in the July Cup.

More recently Aidan O'Brien's Starspangledbanner was an emphatic winner of the 2010 Golden Jubilee Stake to notch up the Ballydoyle master's win in the prestigious sprint.
