Gimcrack Stakes - 23rd August, 2014

Richard Hannon's Baitha Alga produced a career best performance when landing the Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot and now the classy juvenile will bid for more Group success on Saturday afternoon, as he lines up in the Gimcrack Stakes, which is one of the highlights on Ebor Handicap day at York.

He will have the burden of giving all his rivals weight, but the manner in which he quickened off a fast pace suggests that he is more than capable of build on that Royal win and he has to be considered for this fascinating two-year-old contest on the Knavesmire.

Hannon will unleash a dual-pronged attack and Beacon has to be respected, as he was in flying form before disappointing in the Molecomb Stakes at Glorious Goodwood and he should be on the vicinity in what is a cracking 6f contest at the weekend.

Peter Chapple-Hyam's Ahlan Emarati has been competing in some top notch races this season and has often found one too good, but he is a consistent performer and should be thereabouts, whilst Aidan O'Brien's The Great War will have form to find with Baitha Alga from the aforementioned Norfolk, but has to be respected from the Ballydoyle stable.

Accepted will put his unbeaten record on the line having won his two career starts and looks an interesting runner, whilst Jungle Cat is another who has been running consistently in top events and can't be ignored for Mark Johnston's team.

Gimcrack Stakes History

The Gimcrack Stakes is a Group Two race run at York over six furlongs for two-year-old colts and geldings.

Gimcrack was a successful horse of the 18th century and had this race named in his honour in 1846 when the inaugural running took place on the Knavesmire.  Initially open to both genders it then changed to a race for colts and geldings in 1987 and has now become an integral part of York's Ebor Festival.

With an illustrious roll of honour many winners of the Gimcrack Stakes have gone on to bigger and better things and in recent times there is one horse that really stands out.

Rock of Gibraltar won this race in 2001 for Aidan O'Brien and then went on to win the Dewhurst Stakes later that season.  The following year he burst on to the Classic scene by winning the English and Irish 2000 Guineas before grabbing further Group One successes in the St James's Palace Stakes and Sussex Stakes.

Back in 1971, Mill Reef won the Gimcrack Stakes before going on to glory in the Epsom Derby, so this race certainly does occasionally unearth some superstars of the equine world and is a springboard to Classic success.
