Geoffrey Freer Stakes History

The Geoffrey Freer Stakes is a Group Three race run at Newbury over one mile, five furlongs and 61 yards for horses aged three years or older and can often be used as a trial for the St Leger.

Even though it is open to all horses aged three years or older, trainers can often target it with their Classic candidates as the trip is absolutely ideal for trainers who are looking to hand their stars a tilt at the staying distance and many have used the race as a springboard to Doncaster at the end of the flat season.

It had been handed Group Two status, but was handed Group Three status in 2006, but still hasn't lost any prestige and has an illustrious roll of honour with Ardross certainly a standout winner of the race in 1981 and 1982.

As well as winning back-to-back renewals of the event, the classy colt went on to dominate the staying division winning two Ascot Gold Cups as well as Goodwood Cups and a Doncaster Cup during a superb career.

John Dunlop's Silver Patriarch was another classy winner and he had already bagged victory in the 1997 St Leger at Doncaster before winning the 1999 Geoffrey Freer and Jeremy Noseda's Sixties Icon was another to achieve that feat by bagging Classic glory at the Yorkshire venue before winning the 2008 Geoffrey Freer.

However, the most successful horse in the race's history is the Marcus Tregoning-trained Mubtaker who won three consecutive renewals of the event in 2002, 2003 and 2004 to hand jockey Michael Hills a trio of wins as well.
