Fred Winter Juvenile Handicap Hurdle - 12th March, 2014

Nicky Henderson's Dawalan has impressed with a couple of Newbury wins this season and the Seven Barrows inmate will look to build on those efforts when he lines up in a wide open renewal of the Fred Winter Juvenile Handicap Hurdle on the second day of the Cheltenham Festival.

He was beaten in a jumpers' bumper contest at Kempton Park last time out, but a return to the hurdling sphere should see him in his best light and he sets the standard for what will be a thrilling betting heat with a whole host of raiders in with a chance of landing the prize on Wednesday afternoon.

Jonjo O'Neill's Goodwood Mirage was unable to land a blow in the Adonis Juvenile Hurdle last time out, but he was a classy contender on the level and should improve for that run and can't be discounted with AP McCoy in the saddle for the Jackdaws Castle team.

Willie Mullins's Ivan Grozny disappointed when well fancied for the Spring Juvenile Hurdle in Ireland and will look to bounce back here, whilst Paul Nicholls's Katgary has been attracting some notable interest since his move from France and the betting could guide punters on his chances.

Solar Impulse was a decent third in the aforementioned Adonis at Kempton Park and is another prominent in a wide open heat, whilst the likes of Baradari and Noble Inn are another couple of lively players in a real conundrum for national hunt fans to work out.

Fred Winter Juvenile Handicap Hurdle

The Fred Winter Juvenile Handicap Hurdle is a Grade Three race run on day two of the Cheltenham Festival over two miles and 110 yards and is open to four-year-old horses.

Established in 2005, the race was added to the Cheltenham Festival schedule when the festival became four days long and is now the penultimate race on day two.

Named after the legendary jockey and trainer Fred Winter it commemmorates a man who died in 2004 after amassing some staggering statistics in the world of racing.

During an illustrious career Winter rode 17 winners at the Cheltenham Festival and surpassed that with his training record as he saddled 28 winners at the festival which included wins in the Cheltenham Gold Cup and Champion Hurdle as a jockey and a trainer.

Attracting some of the leading four-year-olds this race is sure to unearth some future stars who progress from handicap company to contest some of the championship races later on in their career.

Gaspara was an impressive five length winner of the 2007 contest and managed to land trainer David Pipe a masterful double as his inmate had won the Imperial Cup the week before and therefore gained a bonus of £50,000 for winning this festival contest.

The most impressive winner to date was the Paul Nicholls-trained Sanctuaire, who ridden by Ruby Walsh, stormed to a nine length success in 2010 and built on that win by going on to win the 2011 Scottish Champion Hurdle at Ayr.
