CGA Foxhunters' Chase - 14th March, 2014

Enda Bolger's On The Fringe was a decent fourth in the 2011 Foxhunters' Chase and he will look to build on that effort in the 2014 renewal on Friday afternoon as he looks to hand JP McManus another winner at the Cheltenham Festival in what is a wide open renewal of this energy-sapping contest.

However, he was last seen finishing second to Tammys Hill at Leopardstown and that pair will lock horns again in this contest, but Tammys Hill hasn't tried out the undulations of Prestbury Park and was last seen being beaten by Warne, so he will need to bounce back here.

Oscar Delta appeared to have the race at his mercy last year when jumping the last in front, but he unshipped Jane Mangan in the run-in, so that pair will be desperate to make amends for last year's disappointment and he can't be discounted in a race that could be dominated by the Irish.

Harbour Court has some classy form this season, but fell at Kelso last time out and will need to bounce back from that effort, whilst Pearlysteps has been in top form for Henry Daly and will look to step up to the big time and could fight out what should be a thrilling finish.

Of the others, Berties Dream is a former festival winner and could be potential each-way value if relishing a return to the track, whilst Divine Intavention and That's Rhythm add more depth to a thrilling betting heat that is a tough conundrum for punters.

Country Gentleman's Association Foxhunters' Chase History

The Country Gentleman's Association Foxhunter Chase is a race run on day four of the Cheltenham Festival over three miles, two-and-a-half furlongs for amatuer riders and horses aged five years or older.

Established in 1904, the Foxhunter Chase is widely renowned as the 'amateur Gold Cup' as it is run over exactly the same course and distance as the Cheltenham Gold Cup and is only open to amateur jockeys.

The race often attracts the leading hunter chasers from the UK & Ireland and the race is usually an ultra-competitive contest with some top quality horses going to post.

Six horses have managed to win the Foxhunter Chase on two occasions with The Callant achieving the feat first winning back-to-back renewals of the race in 1956 and 1957.

More recently, Double Silk bagged consecutive crowns in 1993 and 1994 for jockey Ron Treloggen and the last one to achieve the brace of wins was Earthmover.  Amazingly, Earthmover won the 1998 Foxhunter for trainer Richard Barber and didn't win his second tile until 2004 as a 13-year-old for Paul Nicholls.

Baby Run was a classy winner of the 2010 race for trainer Nigel Twiston-Davies and son Sam and was forever looking the winner in the 2011 contest when Sam's brother Willie was propelled out the saddle with only a couple of fences to go leaving eventual winner Zemsky out in front to cause a shock in the race.
