Fillies' Mile History

The Fillies' Mile is a Group One race run at Newmarket's Cambridgeshire meeting over one mile and is open to two-year-old fillies.

Established in 1973 the Fillies' Mile was originally run at Ascot but in 2011 it was transferred to Newmarket and is now part of the three-day Cambridgeshire meeting.

With some of the best two-year-old fillies contesting the race it is often used as a stepping stone to the 1000 Guineas run the following season and some have even gone on to Epsom glory in the Oaks.

Notable winners of the race that have gone on to much bigger and better are things are Oh So Sharp, who for Sir Henry Cecil won the Fillies' Mile in 1984 and then a year later soared to glory in the 1000 Guineas, Epsom Oaks and St Leger to bag the Fillies' Triple Crown.

More recently another Cecil duo have gone on to win a Classic after taking the Fillies' Mile with Bosra Sham winning the 1000 Guineas in 1995 and Reams of Verse bagging Oaks glory in 1996.  With six wins in total Cecil is the most successful trainer in the race and with the contest having moved to Newmarket the master of Warren Place is bound to saddle some more winners of this excellent Group One contest.
