Falmouth Stakes History

The Falmouth Stakes is a Group One race open to fillies and mares aged three years or older run over a mile at Newmarket.  Given Group One status in 2004 it has become an integral part of Newmarket's three-day July meeting and it has attracted some superstars since it was established in 1911.

Like so many of the big races Lester Piggott holds the record for the most successes in the race as a jockey, notching up seven wins, with his first coming in 1957 aboard Sylphide and his last in 1994 where he partnered Lemon Souffle to victory.

In recent years both Richard Hannon and James Fanshawe have managed to train the winner three years running with Soviet Song bagging back-to-back successes in 2004 and 2005 for the latter handler.

Other notable winners of the race include Music Show and possibly one of the greatest mares of all time in Goldikova, who won this contest in 2009.
