Glenfarclas Cross Country Handicap Chase History

The Glenfarclas Cross Country Handicap Chase is a race run on day one of the Cheltenham Festival over three miles, seven furlongs and is open to horses aged five years or older.

Established in 2005 when the festival was extended to four days, the Cross Country Handicap Chase is one of the greatest spectacles of the entire meeting as horses jump an array of obstacles during the race.  Not only do the runners have to deal with a whole host of quirky hurdles they also have to contend with various banks and sharp turns around the middle of the racecourse.

One trainer has dominated the race since its inception and that is Irish-based handler Enda Bolger, who has saddled the winner four times since the race began.

Spot Thedifference won the inaugural running for Bolger, whilst Heads Onthe Ground made it two wins in three years, but it would be Garde Champetre who would really be the star for the Irishman.

Nina Carberry had already partnered Heads Onthe Ground to success in 2006, but she cemented her place in history by partnering Garde Champetre to victory in 2008 and 2009 to secure three consecutive victories in the unique race and hand Bolger four wins in five years.

With the race becoming ever more popular, Cheltenham now offer trials for the race during their October and November meetings with Bolger usually saddling a plethora of runners in each race.

Sizing Australia was a gallant winner of the 2011 renewal handing trainer Henry De Bromhead his first win in the race and it was the catalyst for more winners at the festival for De Bromhead as he also won the Queen Mother Champion Chase with Sizing Europe,
