Vincent O'Brien County Hurdle History

The Vincent O'Brien County Hurdle is a handicap hurdle run on day four of the Cheltenham Festival over two miles, one furlong for horses aged five years or older.

Established in 1920, the County Hurdle carried the name of Vincent O'Brien for the first time in 1995 to honour a the legendary trainer, who amassed 23 victories at the Cheltenham Festival and has held that title ever since.

Historically, run as the last race of the festival a rescheduling of the races meant the County Hurdle is now run after the Triumph Hurdle on the Friday before the Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle.

A race that always attracts large numbered fields, the County Hurdle is one of the toughest races on the festival card for punters with horses in excess of 25 often going to post contest the £75,000 pot on offer.

The County Hurdle is often a race that trainers who have horses running in the Imperial Cup the weekend before the Cheltenham Festival will enter their horses in the County as well in searc of a bonus put up by the sponsors.  If a horse can manage to win the Imperial Cup and then go on to win a Cheltenham Festival race there's usually a £50,000 bonus on offer and trainers usually target the County Hurdle or Coral Cup.

Incidentally, Martin Pipe's Blowing Wind managed to win both the Imperial Cup and the County Hudle in 1998 before going on to be placed in the 2001 Grand National.

More recently, Rooster Booster used winning the County Hurdle as a catalyst to greater achievements and after winning the 2002 County managed to come back 12 months later and win the 2003 Champion Hurdle.
