Coronation Cup - June 7, 2014

Star French performer Cirrus Des Aigles will head to Epsom Downs on Saturday and is one of the leading names on a terrific Investec Derby card as the eight-year-old will line up in the Coronation Cup, which will see some of the elite older horses do battle in the 1m 4f contest.

With the news that last year's Derby hero Ruler Of The World is set to miss the race then the aforementioned French star will be sent off a warm order and he has been in sparkling for this season, firstly, beating Treve in the Prix Ganay, before trouncing Lockinge winner Olympic Glory in the Prix D'ispahan, so if he can repeat those brace of efforts will be very tough to beat.

Andre Fabre's Flintshire could be another making the trip over from France, but somewhat disappointed in the Arc and needs to show he can handle the camber at Epsom, but one runner we know excels round the track is last year's Epsom Oaks winner Talent, who will be aiming to deliver for Ralph Beckett again on the big stage.

Away from that classy quartet, Ambivalent was a fine winner of the Group Two Middleton Stakes and has winning form in this grade, whilst the likes of foreign raider Empoli and William Haggas's Battalion are a couple of potential players who add more depth to the contest.

Coronation Cup History

The Coronation Cup is a Group One race run at Epsom Downs over one mile, four furlongs for horses aged four years or older.

Established in 1902, the race was created to commemorate the coronation of King Edward VII and it has since grown in stature considerably and now is ran on the opening day of the Epsom Derby festival and provides top class Group One action before the Epsom Oaks later on in the meeting.

One of the most notable winners of the race came in its infancy when Pretty Polly won the event in 1905 and won it during a Triple Crown season which saw her win the 1000 Guineas, Epsom Oaks and St Leger in a memorable year.  Amazingly, the wonder filly retained her title in 1906 in the Coronation Cup, a feat only been achieved four times since.

Some legendary horses have won this event over the years and the 1970's produced some spectacular winners with Mill Reef, Roberto and Bustino all taking the honours on the Downs between 1972 and 1975.

Triptych was a dual winner in the late 1980's for Patrick Biancone, whilst the 1990's saw fantastic wins from Swain, Singspiel and Silver Patriarch.  One man who has dominated the contest since the turn of the century is Ballydoyle supremo Aidan O'Brien, who has won the event five times since 2005.

Following Yeats' brilliant victory in 2005 the leading Irish trainer notched up victories in 2007, 2008, 2010 and finally in 2011, where Racing Post Trophy winner St Nicholas Abbey wore down Midday to land the prize following a power-packed ride from Ryan Moore.
