Chester Vase - 9th May, 2013

Aidan O'Brien's Ruler Of The World propelled on to the Epsom Derby scene with an impressive victory in the 2013 Chester Vase, as the Ballydoyle inmate stormed clear of his three rivals to land the Group Three prize at odds of 10/11 favourite.

Tracking the front-running Mister Impatience, Ryan Moore kicked the well-backed market leader to the head of affairs and he duly kicked clear of his rivals to win by six lengths and could now be a genuine Classic contender for the hot O'Brien team.

Chester Vase History

The Chester Vase is a Group Three race run at Chester over one mile, four furlongs and 66 yards and is open to three-year-old colts and geldings and is widely regarded as a leading Epsom Derby Trial.

One of the highight's of Chester's May meeting the Chester Vase has an illustrious roll of honour with some top class horses sitting in the list of winners and have used the race as a springboard to Classic glory.

Arguably the most notable winner and one of the biggest names in horse racing history won the race in 1981, as Sir Michael Stoute's Shergar was a glorious winner of the 1981 running.  The superstar then memorably progressed to Epsom where he stormed to victory in the Derby and become one of the most emphatic winners of the race in the history of the coveted Classic.

Stoute has continued to shine in the contest and more recently the Freemasons Lodge handler has grabbed victory in the 2000s with Papal Bull and Doctor Fremantle, but it's Aidan O'Brien who has the best recent record in the contest.

The Ballydoyle supremo won the race in 2007 with Soldier of Fortune, before Golden Sword won it in 2009, but it would be Treasure Beach's win in the 2011 renewal that would see him progress the furthest, as he was just edged out into second place in the 2011 Derby by the fast-finishing Pour Moi.

So this race certainly holds top pointers for the Epsom Classic and is a race to keep in touch with when you are compiling your leading Derby contenders.
