Champion Four Year Old Hurdle History

The Champion Four Year Old Hurdle is a Grade One race run at the Punchestown Festival over two miles for horses aged four years old.

One of the leading novice events of the meeting, this race often attracts horses who have taken part in the Triumph Hurdle a month previous at the Cheltenham Festival and it has also unearthed some future stars of the national hunt division.

Nicky Henderson's Katarino was a notable winner of this contest in 1999, as the juvenile had already notched up success in the Triumph at the Cheltenham Festival and secured the double when storming to a one-and-a-half length success in this contest.

Henderson has a decent record in this race and the Seven Barrows handler saddled Punjabi to success in 2007, before that raider went to lift the coveted Champion Hurdle two years later in 2009 to highlight that this race can unearth future superstars.

Grandouet was victorious in the 2011 renewal and he would be another who would add to Henderson's terrific record in the race, whilst the illustrious roll of honour has seen the likes of Aidan O'Brien, Willie Mullins and Paul Nicholls all secure winners in this race.
