Champion Bumper History

The Champion Bumper is a Grade One flat race run on day two of the Cheltenham Festival over two miles, 100 yards for horses aged four to six years old.

Established in 1992, the Champion Bumper is one of the most fiercely contested races of the festival as a plethora of runners venture over from Ireland to battle it with the best of the UK raiders in a cracking contest.

Historically, the Irish contenders have performed very well in the final race on the second day of the festival and one man in particular has a fabulous record in the race.

Willie Mullins has amassed a staggering six wins in this race as a trainer and incidentally rode Wither or Which to victory in 1996 to create history by training and riding the same Cheltenham Festival winner.

Following his 1996 win he came back to the following year's festival with a future star as Florida Pearl stormed to victory before becoming one of the greatest racehorses of the last few decades.  After winning the race as a five-year-old, Florida Pearl then returned the following year to lift the RSA Chase title before winning four Irish Hennessy crowns and a King George VI Chase in a glittering career.

Alexander Banquet notched up the hat-trick for Mullins in 1998 ridden by a youthful amateur named Ruby Walsh and when Cousin Vinny won in 2008, piloted by Mullins' son Patrick, he had notched up six wins in under 15 years.

Dunguib and Cue Card emphatically won the 2009 and 2010 renewals by ten and eight lengths respectively, and have used it as a springboard to contest bigger and better things.  However, both were beaten in the Supreme Novices' Hurdle the following year when sent off short-priced favourites.
