Breeders' Cup Mile History

The Breeders' Cup Mile is a Grade One race run over a mile for horses aged three years or older and makes up part of the Breeders' Cup World Championships.

One of the highlights of the two-day bonanza, the Breeder's Cup Mile has been a regular race on the calendar since the Breeders' Cup inception in 1984.  Run on the turf it has unearthed some of the greatest milers of all time and with a two million dollar purse on offer continues to attract some star-studded fields.

The Breeders' Cup Mile has an illustrious roll of honour with the likes of Royal Academy for Vincent O'Brien and Barathea for Luca Cumani winning the race in the early years, but there is a modern day heroine who has broken all records before her.

Goldikova has been a revelation in this contest and managed to win three successive renewals for trainer Freddy Head in 2008 as a three-year-old and then again in 2009 and 2010 as a four and five-year-old.  The wonder mare will no doubt head over from her native France to try and gain a fourth consecutive success in 2011 for Head, who incidentally has ridden the winner of the race twice when aboard another great mare Miesque.

Following the introduction of the Breeders' Cup Challenge in 2007 a selection of qualification races have been installed and the winner will gain an automatic invite to the Breeders' Cup Mile if they can win the qualifier.

The Champions Mile at Sha Tin racecourse, the Woodbine Mile, the Del Mar Breeders' Cup Mile, the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot, the Shadwell Turf Mile Stakes from Keeneland and the Oak Tree Mile Stakes from Santa Anita are the current sextet that the winner can an instant invitation to the Breeders' Cup Mile.
