Betfair Chase - 22nd November, 2014

Cue Card was a sublime four-and-a-half length winner of the Betfair Chase last season and the Colin Tizzard-trained star could head back to Haydock Park on November 22 to try and emulate the great Kauto Star who won back-to-back renewals in 2006 and 2007.

The top class performer propelled clear of Dynaste and Silviniaco Conti in a real demolition job and that pairing are prominent figures in what is a fascinating ante-post betting market and should provide a host of Cheltenham Gold Cup clues.

Paul Nicholls's Silviniaco Conti turned the tables on Cue Card when they clashed in the King George VI Chase at Kempton Park as the dour Ditcheat stayer pulled clear in the closing stages and if he can emulate that display then will put up a strong fight to the former Champion Bumper and Ryanair winner.

Jonjo O'Neill's Taquin Du Seuil was last seen beating Silviniaco Conti when the pair clashed in the Charlie Hall Chase and last season's JLT winner will be aiming to frank the form here, whilst Medermit and The Giant Bolster were down the field then and will take their chance here.

Menorah was a fine winner of the aforementioned Charlie Hall and Philip Hobbs and Richard Johnson will aim to keep up their sensational record in recent big races, whilst the likes of Harry Topper and Double Ross will complete the entry list for what is one of the highlights of the season to date.

Betfair Chase History

The Betfair Chase is a Grade One race run at Haydock Park over three miles for horses aged five years or older and is widely regarded as a trial for the Cheltenham Gold Cup at the Cheltenham Festival.

Established in 2005, the Betfair Chase is the first Grade One event of the national hunt season and often sees Cheltenham Festival hopefuls make their reappearance and generally horses that are going to compete in the Cheltenham Gold Cup the following March.

It may have only been running for a few years, but the Betfair Chase's roll of honour has a very stellar look to it with champions consistently bagging Haydock glory.

After Kingscliff won the inaugural running for trainer Robert Alner it would be the 2006 renewal that saw the emergence of a superstar. Having already bagged top class success in the Tingle Creek Chase, Kauto Star then was upped in trip by Paul Nicholls in the Betfair Chase and he duly relished the extra distance to beat Beef or Salmon by 17 lengths.

He then went on to win the King George VI Chase on Boxing Day, but it would be 2007 that he really gained legendary status as not only did he do the Betfair Chase, King George double, he then went on to storm to Cheltenham Gold Cup glory.

Snoopy Loopy was a shock 33/1 winner of the 2008 Betfair Chase when Kauto Star unseated Sam Thomas, but Nicholls' star propelled back to form the following year to bag his third Betfair Chase success.

Imperial Commander was an emphatic winner of the 2010 Betfair Chase having already notched up his first Gold Cup crown to show this race is often a springboard for the top class races and in particular the Friday showpiece at the Cheltenham Festival.
