BetBright Cup Chase - 24th January, 2015

David Pipe's Dynaste was last seen finishing second to Silviniaco Conti in the King George VI Chase at Kempton Park and now the classy Pond House grey will look to return to winning ways on Saturday, as he could line up in the BetBright Cup Chase at Cheltenham on Festival Trials Day.

Even though he has been touted as a Ryanair Chase contender in a couple of months at the Cheltenham Festival, the nine-year-old has been entered for this 3m 1½f contest as he looks to recapture the winning thread, but he will have some notable rivals in a thrilling race.

On a card that also sees the Cleeve Hurdle take centre stage, Oliver Sherwood's Many Clouds will be aiming to build on a fine victory in the Hennessy Gold Cup and he is a chaser on a huge incline and will be aiming to enhance his Cheltenham Gold Cup claims here.

Alan King's Smad Place ran a decent race when fifth in the Hennessy Gold Cup at Newbury and he showed when second in the RSA Chase at last season's festival that he can produce the goods around the track, so has to be a major player in this intriguing event.

David Bridgwater's stable star The Giant Bolster was a fine winner of this race 12 months ago and he is another that relishes the undulations of GL50 and he's sure to notch up a season's best and can't be underestimated, whilst the reminaing duo of Black Thunder and Theatre Guide add sensational depth to a cracking contest.

BetBright Cup Chase History

The BetBright Cup Chase, formerly known as the Argento Chase, is a Grade Two race run at Cheltenham over three miles, one-and-a-half furlongs for horses aged five years or older and is widely regarded as a trial for the Cheltenham Gold Cup at the Cheltenham Festival.

Ran on Festival Trials day at Prestbury Park it often sees potential Gold Cup hopefuls making their final preparations before heading back to Cheltenham two months later to contest the Friday showpiece.

However, only a handful of runners have managed to bag glory in the Argento Chase and then return to the same venue to lift the coveted Gold Cup crown.

Master Oats was the first to achieve the feat in 1995 as he stormed to a 15-length success in the Argento before emulating that performance by scooting away a couple of months later to win by the same distance in the Cheltenham Gold Cup at the Cheltenham Festival for trainer Kim Bailey and jockey Norman Williamson.

See More Business managed to win the 1998 Argento Chase for a youthful Paul Nicholls, but he had to wait for Gold Cup glory and managed to bag the prize the following year when beating Go Ballistic by a length.

Noel Chance's Looks Like Trouble is the only other horse to achieve the Argento/Gold Cup double as he propelled to glory in the Millennium year to cement this race as one of the leading trials for the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Even though the winner of this race hasn't managed to bag Gold Cup glory as well, there have been some top class winners of the contest including Exotic Dancer and 2012 Grand National winner Neptune Collonges, who have both been placed in Gold Cups during their careers.
