Amlin 1965 Chase - 22nd November, 2014

Al Ferof was only forced to be one rival en route to victory in last season's Amlin 1965 Chase at Ascot, but the Paul Nicholls-trained raider is set to face a much tougher test on Saturday when he makes his seasonal reappearance in this Grade 2 prize at the Berkshire venue.

Last seen finishing fifth in the Ryanair Chase, the Ditcheat inmate will hope to kick off his campaign on a winning note and hand his trainer a fourth win in the race in six years, but as the betting suggests it's a wide open renewal of the 2m 3f contest.

Wishfull Thinking will aim to continue the fine form of Philip Hobbs and Richard Johnson and the 11-year-old kicked off his season with a fine win in the Old Roan Chase at Aintree and if he can replicate that Merseyside effort then has to be a leading player on a card that also sees the Coral Hurdle take place.

Rajdhani Express was a faller in the aforementioned Old Roan Chase and Nicky Henderson's charge will be aiming to complete this time around and has to be on the shortlist, whilst the likes of Somersby and Fox Appeal could be a major factor if finding their best.

Bury Parade will complete the sextet that will go to post and connections will be hoping that he can jump off with the field that should provide a terrific spectacle at the Berkshire venue and could provide some decent Ryanair Chase clues for punters.

Amlin 1965 Chase History

The Amlin 1965 Chase is a Grade Two race run at Ascot over two miles, three furlongs for horses aged four years or older and is widely regarded as a trial for the Queen Mother Champion Chase at the Cheltenham Festival.

Established in 2006, the race has gradually grown in stature from its inaugural running which saw the Paul Nicholls-trained Cerium take glory by beating Knowhere by three-and-a-half lengths.

The 2009 renewal was where the race definitely ignited and attracted a strong field and it was Jonjo O'Neill's Albertas Run who won the race for jockey AP McCoy.  Edging out the classy duo of Planet of Sound and Voy Por Ustedes, Albertas Run then went on to win the 2010 Ryanair Chase at the Cheltenham Festival and even managed to retain that title in 2011.

Albertas Run came back to Ascot to retain his Amlin 1965 title in 2010, but fell and left dual Queen Mother Champion Chase winner Master Minded out in front and Paul Nicholls' star breezed to success before embarking on another quest for Queen Mother glory at the Cheltenham Festival.

So, in the short history of this contest it has already shown that it can attract some of the leading chasers in the UK & Ireland and is sure to grow year-on-year and become an integral part of the trials for both the Queen Mother Champion Chase or even the Ryanair Chase.
