Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle - 13th March, 2014

David Pipe's Kings Palace was ultra-impressive when storming to a 14-length victory at Cheltenham at the International meeting in December and the Pond House inmate will return to Prestbury Park to try and bag glory in the Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle.

A race that has produced many a Cheltenham Festival great, Kings Palace has all the makings of a future star and the manner in which he dealt with some cracking novices in that Grade Two race last year highlighted his potential progression and he sets the standard here.

Willie Mullins has a star-studded team heading to Prestbury Park and last year's emphatic Champion Bumper winner Briar Hill will take his chance here and whilst he hasn't over impressed over timber still remains unbeaten and has been very popular in the betting.

Nicky Henderson's Captain Cutter has blossomed over timber this season and was last seen winning the Grade One Challow Novices' Hurdle and he will be a major player, whilst Malcom Jefferson's Urban Hymn was a taking Grade Two winner at Doncaster last time out and could step up on that effort.

Of the others, Oliver Sherwood's Deputy Dan was another Grade Two winner last time out and is entitled to try his luck at the highest level, whilst the likes of Champagne West, Mosspark and Blakemount add significant depth to a thrilling renewal.

Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle History

The Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle is a Grade One race run on day four of the Cheltenham Festival over three miles for horses aged four years or older.

First run in 2005, the Albert Bartlett was a new addition to the festval calendar when it was extended to four days and is now run just before the Cheltenham Gold Cup on the final day.

Attracting some top class staying novice hurdlers the inaugural winner of the race was Moulin Riche for French trainer Francois Doumen and ridden by Robert Thornton.  Since then some there have been some classy winners of the Albert Bartlett who have gone on to bigger and better things in their national hunt career.

Wichita Lineman won the 2007 renewal for Jonjo O'Neill and AP McCoy and the JP McManus-owned runner managed to bag his second festival victory in 2009 as he stormed to Festival Trophy glory under a sublime McCoy ride.

Another horse who used the Albert Bartlett as a stepping stone to more festival glory was 2009 winner Weapon's Amnesty, who returned to the festival in 2010 to lift the RSA Chase crown.

Nicky Henderson's Bobs Worth was a highly impressive winner of the 2011 renewal having been sent off a short-priced favourite for the race and is bound to be another who can go on to future Graded victories showing that the Albert Bartlett continuously unearths future stars of the national hunt game.
