Set in the peaceful Durham countryside near in the small town of Sedgefield in Stockton-On Tees. Racing has taken place here since around 1732 with the earliest record meetings dating back to 1846.
The course is used for national hunt races and it is left handed an undulating and is a circuit that is 10 furlongs in circumference. It is a tight track that has fairly sharp bends that is not suited to a long strided galloper. The final 100 yards are set in a steep hill that can stap a horses stamina.
The course plays host to 20 race meetings annually which take place over 11 months (no racing in July). The standout race here is the Durham National Handicap Chase which is held in annually in April.
Graham Lee and Brian Hughes have found themselves the racecourses top jockeys in recent seasons with both riders going into double centuries with races they have ran here. Trainer Howard Johnson also does well here with his stable being less than a 30 minute drive away.
