This is one of the most famous racecourses in the United Kingdom and it is used as the headquarters of British racing by the Jockey Club. It is based near the market town of Newmarket in Suffolk.
The racecourse has two separate courses, both of which are used just for flat racing, the Rowley Mile Course and the July Course. Between the two courses they are used for 9 of the Britain’s 32 group 1 races, just one less than Ascot Racecourse.
The July Course is used during the summer months and the highlight of this the Darley July Cup which takes place on the last day of the three day July Meeting, it is the most important six furlong sprint in Europe which has a prize purse of over £400,000.
Due to the courses proximity to several major horse racing stables there is no shortage of world class trainers plying their trade here. On the July course John Gosden who is based in Newmarket is one of the top trainers along with Wiltshire-based Richard Hannon. With the Rowley Mile course trainers that do well are Richard Hills and its also a place to shine again for John Gosden. Jockeys that do well on both courses are Frankie Dettori and Ryan Moore.
There is no draw advantage on the July Course but on the Rowley Mile it depends on the position of the stalls which are moved to avoid damaging the track. It is best to check on the location of the stalls on the previous days racing.
