Oscar Whisky Set For Welsh Champion Hurdle

Oscar Whisky will bid for his second Welsh Champion Hurdle title on Saturday as the Nicky Henderson-trained seven-year-old looks to use the race as a stepping stone to the World Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival and a mouthwatering clash with Big Buck's.

After watching the king of the staying hurdling division, Big Buck's secure his 15th consecutive victory at Cheltenham on Saturday, Nicky Henderson will certainly be aware of the gargantuan task he has ahead of him come March 15, when, if all goes to plan, the pair lock horns in the 3m contest at Prestbury Park.

However, the Seven Barrows handler will want to use Saturday's Welsh Champion Hurdle at Ffos Las as a springboard to the Festival and connections will be hoping the classy performer can emulate his seven length success he recorded in last year's contest.

Owner Dai Walters has already outlined the intentions for his raider to take on the World Hurdle assignment and a duel with Big Buck's and has eluded that only 'a miracle' will stop him going down that route.

He showed last season when winning the Aintree Hurdle over 2m 4f that he certainly has the stamina for the longer distances and a step up to 3m in March could be well within his radar and he will definitely be a lively adversary for the Ditcheat phenomenon, who continues to demolish his rivals with consummate ease.

Bookmakers have Oscar Whisky in the second favourite berth at around 5/1 for the World Hurdle, but if he can produce a scintillating performance in the 2m Ffos Las event then he could well be shortened up dramatically by the odds compilers and Big Buck's, who is odds-on, could well face a stiff challenge in what will definitely be one of the clashes of the entire four day extravaganza.
