Exciting Novice Chases In Prospect At Cheltenham Festival

With the Cheltenham Festival less than seven weeks away the entries for the four non-handicap championship novice chases were released today with some mouthwatering lists of entries compiled, in what is sure to be a fascinating sphere come March.

All the leading protagonists held their ground in the Arkle Challenge Trophy with Nicky Henderson's Sprinter Sacre and Donald McCain's Peddlers Cross both catching the eye.

After the Seven Barrows inmate trounced his market rival in the Wayward Lad Novices' Chase at Kempton Park over the Christmas period he was instantly slashed for the 2m contest, which takes place on March 13, but there will be a plethora of leading contenders heading to the race.

Alongside Peddlers Cross, who had excuses for his poor Kempton showing, Paul Nicholls has left Al Ferof in the contest and he is almost certain to take up that assignment and not head for the Champion Chase after he was well beaten in the Victor Chandler Chase at the weekend.

Apart from that top class trio, Menorah is set to spearhead Philip Hobbs' team, whilst Blackstairmountain could be joined by fellow Irish raider Bog Warrior, with Cue Card and Kid Cassidy adding excellent depth to a mouthwatering entry list.

Meanwhile, Grands Crus was the name glistening on the RSA Chase entries as last year's World Hurdle runner-up looks to go one better in the novice chasing division.

David Pipe's decision to bypass Saturday's Argento Chase has certainly left question marks hanging over his potential involvement in the Cheltenham Gold Cup and if he is kept down the novice route after his fantastic Feltham Novices' Chase victory then will be the one they all have to beat.

Bobs Worth, who was well beaten in that Kempton Park contest on Boxing Day is Nicky Henderson's star entry, whilst Paul Nicholls could send both Silviniaco Conti and Join Together to the contest on March 14.

The Irish unsurprsingly have a strong hand with 19 entries of the 36 in total with Last Instalment and First Lieutenant a notable pair for the Gigginstown House Stud team alongside Bog Warrior, whilst Sir Des Champs is another leading contender from the Emerald Isle in another top class list.
