Ballabriggs Tops 82 Grand National Entries

Ballabriggs is all set to head back to Aintree on April 14 and try and retain his Grand National crown as Donald McCain's star was one of the 82 entries received for the 4m 4f marathon.

The eleven-year-old will be looking to be the first horse to bag back-to-back successes of the world's greatest steeplechase since the mighty Red Rum, who won successive Grand Nationals in 1973 and 1974.

It would be a poignant victory for McCain, who will look to emulate his father Ginger's achievements, after the legendary handler of the mighty Red Rum past away last year and McCain junior already has a plan in place for his gelding as he looks to get him in peak fitness for Aintree.

He has already advised people that Kelso's Premier Chase will be the last port of call for the Trevor Hemmings-owned raider and McCain has already hinted that Ballabriggs may head to the Rendlesham Hurdle on February 18, if he feels the horse needs two runs before a tilt at the £975,000 prize on Merseyside.

The list of entries certainly highlight that this year's renewal is set to be a cracking one as a plethora of top class staying chasers have been handed a place in the field.

Becher Chase winner West End Rocker has already shown a zest for the National course and Alan King will be hoping for greater fortune in the 2012 renewal after he was brought down in last year's contest, whilst Nicky Henderson is another with a lively player in the ante-post betting.

Shakalakaboomboom was a gallant second to Calgary Bay in last weekend's Skybet Chase and the pair could clash again in April, whilst David Pipe will be hoping his Royal Ascot and Cheltenham Festival winning inmate Junior will make it into the field when the weights are revealed later in the month.

Lexus Chase winner Synchronised is another in the higher echelons of the betting and could head to Aintree after a run in the Cheltenham Gold Cup, whilst the Irish contingent looks ultra-competitive.

Willie Mullins' notched up his 100th winner this afternoon and he could be represented by Thyestes Chase winner On His Own and The Midnight Club, who was well fancied for last year's contest.

Of the others, Niche Market has been placed round the National course and is another of note for Paul Nicholls, whilst emerging talent Hold On Julio and Always Right are another top class brace of runners who could line up in just over two months.
