Flemenstar

Age: 7

Trainer: Peter Casey

Notable Race Wins:-

Arkle Novice Chase (Leopardstown): 2012

Powers Gold Cup: 2012

Seldom do you see a horse with such fluidity over a fence, but Flemenstar was a sight to behold in the 2011/2012 season as he produced some sensational leaps during a campaign that saw him propel towards the head of the ante-post betting for the 2013 Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Peter Casey's stable star may have suffered defeat to the classy Bog Warrior on his chasing debut, but since then he has blown all his opposition away and become one of Ireland's leading jumping prospects for the national hunt season.

After winning a few minor contests, he then showed he was an elite performer when storming to a 19-length success in the Arkle Novice Chase at Leopardstown, before ending the season with an equally-as-impressive victory by 11 lengths in the Powers Gold Cup.

Now the seven-year-old will step out of the novice division and embark on a season taking on the big boys, but many bookmakers have been quick to offer relatively short prices about him winning the 2013 Cheltenham Gold Cup and if he can continue on an upward curve then he could well be a leading contender this season.

Casey will no doubt ease him to the top level, but he well may look to take in the Irish Hennessy Gold Cup before heading to Prestbury Park in March to try and win the coveted blue riband event on the final day of the extravaganza.

Form For 2012/2013 Season

  • 11/11/12 - Fortria Chase - Navan (1st of 5 - SP 10/11 Fav) - All eyes were on Flemenstar as he was sent off a short-priced favourite for the Grade Two Fortria Chase and the Peter Casey-trained star didn't disappoint as he produced an immaculate round of jumping to bag the Navan crown and cement his place towards the head of the Cheltenham Gold Cup bettiing.  Jumping with pizzazz yet again, he merely pulled clear of some classy rivals, including Big Zeb, and was a ready winner to kick off what could be a profitable campaign this year.
  • 09/12/12 - John Durkan Memorial Chase - Punchestown (1st of 3 - SP Evens Fav) - Another superb performance from Flemenstar saw his price for the 2013 Cheltenham Gold Cup contract as he got the better of the classy, and previously unbeaten Sir Des Champs in a cracker of a John Durkan.  Sent to the front from the outset, Andrew Lynch pulled clear of his main rival in the closing stages to win by five lengths.
  • 09/12/12 - Lexus Chase - Leopardstown (3rd of 9 - SP 5/4 Fav) - Having looked like the winner for most of the race, Flemenstar had to settle for third place in the Lexus Chase, as he was collared late on by First Lieutenant and Tidal Bay in a memorable renewal of the Grade One.  Leading heading into the straight, he looked like he would have no problems with the three-mile trip, but he slowed in the closing stages and was headed 100 yards from the line.
